Northern Lights – Norway

Green northern lights across a starry winter night sky, with snowy tree silhouettes in the foreground.

In this frame, captured in northern Norway near Tromsø, layers of green Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) cover the winter sky. The cloud texture near the horizon softens the tones of the light, while the leafless tree on the right becomes the visual anchor of the composition. The snow texture in the foreground works like a base that makes the cold and distance of the scene palpable.

The photograph was taken with a wide-angle lens, using low ISO and a long exposure. This preserved both the stars and the aurora’s flowing structure, while keeping the details on the snow visible. Working in an area with minimal light pollution helped the sky’s gradual tonal transitions land cleanly in the frame.

This work belongs to a series that combines northern lights, night landscapes, and long-exposure principles. In my portfolio, it is one of the core pieces that reflects Norway’s winter atmosphere and the light character of regions near the Arctic Circle.
